Essential Reading for the New Author
This
is not great literature but then again maybe it is. I felt his pain and
anguish after his near death experience, as I felt his frustration at the
urge to write and his despair at no one listening. I felt his guilt and
suffering through his alcohol addiction and his deep, abiding love for his
long suffering wife. I think that is great literature, maybe not great
prose, but satisfying, rewarding and adding value to my time - greatness.
The book is full of tips for young players and even some detailed advice on
what to disregard in the world of grammatical correctness (embellished of
course with suitable cautions) and telling the real story.
He is a good - no a great - writer and what I would have given to have him
as a teacher. I haven't read many of his novels (yet) but grew up on his
films. I think Carrie was the first, but it has a new significance when you
understand the cognitive processes that brought the ideas in to this world
from King's own. This book though is of more value to me than any of his
fiction.
King is a purveyor of the stark reality of writing for a living and boldly
go those before and after him in that quest. This is a must read.
